The first European Forum on Best Practices in Gender Equality follows the attribution of the 2012 "Top Company for Gender Equity" Award to Bank of New York Mellon Luxembourg in recognition of the great results demonstrated by BNYM Luxembourg in the recruitment, retention and advancement of a balanced percentage between men and women at all levels of its hierarchy.

As already announced, the Top Company for Gender Equity award process is meant to be about more than finding a winner. Inspiring Wo-Men aims at providing a regional platform for discussion of successful strategies and best practice to improve gender balance in decision-making positions, as well as offering access to benchmarking information to enable candidate companies to compare their performance to the industry standards as well as to the performance of Bank of New York Mellon Luxembourg, awarded Top Company for Gender Equity 2012.

At this first edition of the Forum, participants from leading companies will engage in discussions to share their perspectives and insights on issues and proven solutions for the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women at all levels. The Forum will feature sessions tied to demonstrated outcomes in increasing the representation of women, as well as in their retention and advancement.

Programme :
09.00 : Registration
09.30 : Welcome by Clara Moraru, founder of the "Inspiring Woman of the Year" and "Top Company for Gender Equity" Awards
09.45 : Opening Plenary, Best Practices with Q&A – featuring the 2012 Top Company for Gender Equity: Bank of New York Mellon Luxembourg.

Keynote: David Micallef, Bank of New York Mellon Luxembourg, CEO and managing director

Plenary Description: What practices and concrete solutions are behind the success of BNY Mellon Luxembourg in the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women? In this keynote, CEO David Micallef will discuss the programs that have significantly impacted the representation of women at BNY Mellon, the barriers that were overcome, and the factors that made their implementation successful.

Parralel Workshops 10.45 - 12.15

Workshop 1: Best Practices in Recruiting Women

Workshop Description: What are companies doing to recruit top female talent? The job market is becoming competitive once again and employers need to look beyond monetary compensation to attract top talent. Find out recommendations and strategies for actively recruiting women when speakers from leading companies engage in discussions to share their perspectives, insights on issues and proven solutions for the recruitment of women at all levels.

Moderator: TBC

Workshop 2: Best Practices in Retaining Women - the mid level
Workshop Description: It’s no secret that the retention of women at the mid-level is a challenge. The loss of female talent with significant experience represents a significant loss in innovation potential for companies. Mid-level women have distinct needs, and companies are learning that addressing those needs with specific programs result in higher retention. Join the panel to understand the root causes of this trend and how they are implementing innovative initiatives to retain top talent.

Moderator: TBC

Workshop 3: Best Practices in Advancing Women in Finance and Technical Companies
Workshop Description
: Despite ongoing efforts to increase the representation of women in financial and technical leadership positions, statistics show that women are significantly less likely than their male counterparts to attain senior positions. How do companies identify, develop, and promote technical women who show the promise of a leader? The panel will discuss practical approaches to identifying top female talent, providing adequate opportunities for advancement, and strategies for supporting women in financial, technical and executive leadership roles.

Moderator: TBC

Workshop 4Sponsorship

Workshop Description: Sponsorship has been identified by recent research as the “last hurdle” for women’s advancement. While women are as equally likely as men to report having mentors, they are significantly less likely than men to report having sponsors. A sponsor is someone who advocates for a woman’s career, opens new doors and opportunities for her, and connects her to influential others. While sponsorship clearly has significant and lasting benefits, many argue that unlike a mentoring relationship, sponsorship has to be “earned” and cannot be institutionalized. In this session, leading companies will present how they are scaling the opportunities for women to obtain sponsorship within their company, and with what results. Moderator: TBC Panelists: TBC

12.30 : Lunch break & networking

Parralel Workshops 14.30 - 16.00

Workshop 5Moving Beyond Flexibility: Innovative Strategies for Retention & Advancement Practices

Workshop Description: Research shows that although entry level recruitment is close to pipeline levels for many if not most companies, one of the biggest challenges is in the retention of women. Women ask companies to introduce some level of flexible work programs to help them manage better their family and professional life, which in return would retain employees (women and men) across all levels. What is the situation in Luxembourg and in Europe? We want to delve into some of the more innovative programs and initiatives being tried to support men and women to address retention of  women.

Moderator: TBC Panelists: TBC

Workshop 6Career Pathways for Women in Science, Technology and Research – where are the bright spots?

Workshop Description: Women in science, technology and research are pursuing a variety of careers – programming, individual contributor roles in engineering, IT, program management, technical sales, leadership, and many others. How do these career paths differ between organizations? Are women more likely to pursue certain paths over others? What are the issues for women in different realms of technical work, and how are companies designing interventions accordingly?

Moderator: TBC

Panelists: Dr. Gudrun Ziegler, elected 2012 "Inspiring Woman of the Year" in Science, technology and research, others TBC

Workshop 7Targets, Goals or Quotas? Driving change through measurement

Workshop Description: Measurement and goal setting has been shown to be critical to a company’s ability to increase its representation of  women, especially in fields typically masculine, such as finance, or science, technology and research. However, many companies are reluctant to have “targets” for fear that they will be interpreted as a “quota”. How are successful companies leveraging targets, goals, or quotas to drive change inside their organization? What have been the positive and unintended consequences for their company?

Moderator: TBC Panelists: TBC

Workshop 8: Best Practices in Creating and Sustaining Cultural Change
Workshop Description
: Organizational change to create cultures that foster gender diversity is the most difficult issue faced by companies who strive to reap the benefits from gender diversity on innovation. This workshop addresses the issue of breaking down barriers to change towards the greater recruitment, retention, and advancement of women. Companies will discuss such topics as how their organization sustains its gains around diversity, showcasing the process through which this change happened, how they approach igniting change towards improving their culture for technical women, the lessons learned in driving change forward, and strategies to keep increasing the representation of women and the vision for continuing the momentum.
